Q&A: with NYC interior designer Blair Harris

My good friend Blair Harris and I sat down this week for a little Q&A to discuss her recent accomplishment-her 1 year old business of Blair Harris Interior Design. The girl not only has an amazing eye for interior design but knows how to find amazing pieces at her downtown regular shopping spots. Check out what this classic modernist decorator had to say about owning her own business and what she we do if she ever had the opportunity to design Audrey Hepburn's home. Check out her website at www.blairharris.com.

After college you got your first job at Noel Jeffrey Designs who is a pretty well established interior decorator in the city. What made you decide to go out on your own and start Blair Harris Designs?

I loved working for a high-end designer and learned so much but felt ready and anxious to execute my own designs. I had a couple future clients lined up before I left my job so I felt more confident in leaving when I did.

What’s the first thing you do in the morning?

Read my emails on my phone in bed, and then make coffee.

How would describe your design style?

I would describe myself as a classic modernist, although I work a lot of different styles into the designs for my clients. I find myself shopping for my clients downtown a lot more than uptown these days, although I am at the D&D building at least once a week! I love the new 1stdibs showroom at 200 Lexington also!

When working with a client how do you know what their vision is?

Most people have a pretty clear idea of things or colors they like, they just don't know how to channel their thoughts to create a cohesive space. I am pretty familiar with the design market since I shop almost every day so I can help people find things that fit what they are looking for and fit all the parts together to produce great rooms.

Who are your favorite interior designers at the moment?

I appreciate so many designers work but I love Katie Ridder's use of color and Kelly Wearstler use of pattern. I also love Steven Harris's work for a more minimalist look. His work is closer to my personal style.

What’s your favorite thing about owning your own business?

Freedom! I can make my own schedule and decisions without having to report to anyone else.

What are you looking forward to most this winter?

I am going to Paris in late January to do a little shopping for work (and pleasure of course) with my sister and mom.

How would you describe your fashion style?

I like classic designs with a twist. Mostly, I am a tee shirt and jeans kind of girl but try to wear interesting accessories like scarves, blazers and jewelry to dress things up a bit.

Where can we find you shopping for clothes/accessories?

I shop in and around my neighborhood the most. I love this new store called JF & Sons on University. They only carry one-of-a-kind pieces. I've shopped there too much lately! I also love the jewelry and accessories at Castor & Pollux in the West Village.

If you had the option to pick anyone to design their home who would it be and why?

I actually have never thought about that...Maybe Audrey Hepburn and do something very tailored yet glamorous. I also can't wait to design a home of my own some day...I'd be the perfect client. Ha!
